Joe Delaney remembers 1965: Jones, Leonard at the Flamingo
Friday, Oct. 20, 2000 | 9:18 a.m.
Jack Jones, possessor of one of the finest pop vocal instruments in the business, shared billing with insult-comedian Jack E. Leonard at the Flamingo. Leonard would open with "Good evening, opponents." "Fat Jack" was a Frank Sinatra favorite. Note that in 1965 Frank Sinatra Jr. was in the lounge. In the 1970s Leonard and Sinatra Jr. worked together in the Frontier Lounge. Leonard left us in the 1980s. Sinatra Jr. last worked here in the early 1990s, conducting for his father. Jones was a 1999 Grammy Award nominee for Best Album, a "Tribute to Tony Bennett," and will perform at the Suncoast in November.
