Safeway Inc. of Pleasanton, Calif., which acquired the Vons supermarket chain in 1997, said its 25 Vons stores in Las Vegas won't be affected by a workers' strike at a warehouse in Tracy, Calif.
The warehouse, operated by Summit Logistics and which serves 245 Safeway stores in Nevada, California and Hawaii, makes deliveries to eight Safeway stores in Northern Nevada. The warehouse doesn't serve any Vons stores in Las Vegas, said Safeway spokeswoman Debra Lambert.
About 1,600 workers demanding higher wages and safer conditions at the warehouse walked out Wednesday after talks broke down following eight weeks of negotiation.
