Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000 | 10:56 a.m.
Named on Oct. 19, 2000
Male Athlete of the Week: LEW DeLEON
School: Foothill
Class: Sophomore
Sport: Tennis
Last week: DeLeon captured his second Sunrise Region individual singles title in as many years, reeling off three straight-set wins before defeating Green Valley's Joel Kielbowicz 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in the championship. DeLeon, who finished third in the state as a freshman in 1999, takes a 50-2 overall season record into this week's state tournament in Reno. "If he's playing his game, he's virtually unstoppable," Falcons coach Jennifer Petersen said. "When he's focused, he really makes his opponent work to win a point."
Female Athlete of the Week: SABRINA CAPANNOLO
School: Silverado
Class: Freshman
Sport: Tennis
Last week: Playing in her first-ever Sunrise Region Tournament, Capannolo rolled to her first individual singles title, downing her four opponents in straight sets. In the finals, Capannolo -- the event's top seed -- knocked off teammate Annabelle Janairo 6-4, 6-1 to improve to 54-0 on the season. Her Skyhawks are also undefeated, and head to Reno for this week's state tournament as the favorite to win it all. "You never know what to expect out of a freshman, but she always seems to come through for us," Silverado coach Bob Clements said. "She's very mature for a ninth grader as far as nerves are concerned. She hits like a future pro player, her footwork is great and I believe she has the best serve in town."
