Reliant Energy Power Generation Inc. of Houston announced plans to build a natural gas-fired power plant 20 miles north of Las Vegas, its second in the Las Vegas area.
Reliant is part owner of El Dorado Energy, a 480-megawatt power facility near Boulder City. The latest plant proposed by Reliant will produce 500 megawatts of electricity, near a landfill owned by Republic Services of Southern Nevada Inc. If all approvals are received, construction will begin this spring, with operations beginning in June 2003.
The plant is the latest in a series of Las Vegas-area plants proposed by national electricity producers. Calpine Energy Co. of San Jose plans a 750-megawatt facility on the Moapa Indian Reservation northeast of Las Vegas, while PG&E Corp. of San Francisco plans a competing, 1,000-megawatt facility nearby.
