Picks: Cimarron to cool down Palo Verde
Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000 | 10:40 a.m.
Forget .800 -- I'm just trying to hold onto .700.
WEEK EIGHT
Friday's Games
PALO VERDE (5-2, 2-0) at CIMARRON-MEM. (7-0, 3-0), 7 p.m.
The Panthers have quietly put together one of the best seasons in town, downing Cheyenne last week for their third straight win. Beating the Desert Shields at home and taking out the Spartans on the road are two entirely different missions, though, and the latter may be mission impossible.
Pick - Cimarron 28, Palo Verde 13
ELDORADO (6-1, 2-0) at DESERT PINES (5-2, 1-1), 7 p.m.
An intriguing battle between area leading rusher Steven Jackson of Eldorado and Desert Pines' Cornell Johnson, who should succeed him as the area's top back someday.
Pick - Eldorado 33, Desert Pines 14
CHAPARRAL (5-2, 1-1) at BASIC (3-4, 2-0), 7 p.m.
The Dallas Dobbs air show touches down in Basic country, where Wolves QB Mark Rose has been none-too-shabby himself.
Pick - Chaparral 34, Basic 24
VALLEY (4-3, 1-1) at LAS VEGAS (3-4, 2-1), 7 p.m.
Leading rusher James Sims returns for the Vikings.
Pick - Las Vegas 21, Valley 17
SILVERADO (4-3, 1-1) at FOOTHILL (4-2, 2-1), 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks should have just enough to get past the upstart Falcons.
Pick - Silverado 28, Foothill 24
CHEYENNE (4-3, 0-2) at CENTENNIAL (2-5, 1-1), 7 p.m.
The Shields desperately need a division win.
Pick - Cheyenne 26, Centennial 10
BONANZA (0-7, 0-2) at BISHOP GORMAN (4-3, 2-0), 7 p.m.
The Gaels should get back on track here.
Pick - Gorman 35, Bonanza 13
WESTERN (3-4, 1-1) at CLARK (2-5, 1-2), 7 p.m.
Two disappointing teams try to avoid Cimarron in the first round.
Pick - Western 20, Clark 17
RANCHO (1-6) at GREEN VALLEY (3-4), 7 p.m.
Two schools that will likely miss the playoffs.
Pick - Green Valley 14, Rancho 6
DURANGO (3-4) at MOJAVE (1-6), 7 p.m.
The Blazers appear to have righted the ship.
Pick - Durango 24, Mojave 12
Last week's record: 6-4
Season to date: 52-21 (.712)
