Goldberg arranged $1 million donation
Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000 | 11:22 a.m.
One day before the death of Chief Executive Arthur Goldberg, it was announced that Park Place Entertainment Corp. of Las Vegas gave $1 million on behalf of Goldberg to the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean County in New Jersey to build a new warehouse.
The company is making the donation through the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, which uses gaming revenue for housing projects and economic development.
The donation will go toward construction of a 35,000-square-foot warehouse planned for Neptune, N.J., that will triple the food pantry's capacity to store food. The pantry hopes to raise $5 million for the project.
A FoodBank official said Wednesday that the pantry has had to turn away an average of three tons of food each week because of insufficient storage space.
"This funding on behalf of Park Place Entertainment will enable the FoodBank to fully reach its potential and, in turn, provide hunger relief for thousands of individuals," the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority said in a statement.
