Recruitment set for prospective parents
A recruitment effort to attract prospective adoptive parents and find homes for children waiting for adoptive families will be 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the County Government Center, 500 Grand Central Parkway.
Potential families, adults interested in adoption, public officials who believe in the cause and children needing homes will attend. Call Elena Perez at 318-4214.
Lecture scheduled Monday at UNLV
K.K. Muraleetharan, a professor at the School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science at the University of Oklahoma, will discuss "Anywhere and Anytime Learning: An Experience with Engineering Freshman Using Laptops and a Wireless Network in the Classroom" 3 p.m. Monday at UNLV.
Muraleetharan will share the results of a pilot laptop program conducted with 24 engineering students at the University of Oklahoma in 1996. Muraleetharan says the wireless network transformed the classrooms, corridors and spaces between buildings into a networked computer laboratory good for active learning.
The free lecture is sponsored by UNLV's Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering. Call 895-2787.
Burton tournament helps Variety Club
The Lance Burton 25th annual Variety Club Golf Classic will be held 12:30 p.m. Monday at Dragon Ridge Golf Club.
Proceeds benefit Variety Club of Southern Nevada. A live auction will be held to benefit Opportunity Village.
Entry fees are $350 per player and include greens fees, unlimited practice balls, a catered luncheon, silent and live auction, awards dinner and the opportunity to win prizes. For more information, call 383-8466.
Program on tap at Davis Plaza
The ninth Disability Awareness Day will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday in the Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza at Lorenzi Park.
It is sponsored by the Southern Nevada Center for Independent Living and the city of Las Vegas Adaptive Recreation Program.
CAT buses equipped with lifts will be available to allow individuals a chance to try out lifts in a stress-free setting. Medical supply vendors will demonstrate the latest in medical and adaptive equipment. For more information, call Annie Gallegos or Cruz Bonilla at 889-4216.
Jewish Geography
The Jewish Community Center will be presenting its fourth annual Jewish Geography event 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 Brush St. The cost is $5 for members, $7 for nonmembers. Baby-sitting is available for $2 per child by reservation only. Call 794-0090.
Poet presents
Author and poet Danny Siegel will give a presentation on "Mitzvah heroes" 7 p.m. Wednesday at Midbar Kodesh Temple, 1940 Paseo Verde Parkway, Henderson. Tickets are $5 for JCC members, $7 for nonmembers. Midbar Kodesh members and children 11 and older are admitted free. Child care will be available. Call 794-0090 for reservations.
