SCORE schedules workshop Thursday
The Las Vegas chapter of Service Corps of Retired Executives will present its next How to Really Start Your Own Business workshop 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Foley Federal Building, 300 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Suite 1100.
SCORE counselors will cover marketing, cash flow, the business plan and a checklist for licensing, permits and other requirements. Cost is $45. Call 388-6104.
Desert Demonstration Gardens hold classes
The Desert Demonstration Gardens are holding an Ask the Experts day 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the gardens, 3701 W. Alta Drive.
Classes include desert-friendly plants, landscape designs for small lots, controlling your water bill and vegetable gardening. Children's classes will also be offered. Admission is free. Call 258-3205.
Join the picnic Sunday in Summerlin
The annual Friends of North Dakota picnic will be 11 a.m. Sunday at the Hills Park in Summerlin, on Hillpointe between Rampart Boulevard and Village Center Drive.
Everyone is welcome to join transplanted North Dakotans in celebrating their roots. There will be raffles, horseshoe play, kids and family games, and an Oktoberfest celebration. Cost is $5 per adult, $3 per child and free for children under 6. Bring a small dessert to share and your choice of beverage. To RSVP, call Helen at 646-6191.
Veterans Center project on Saturday
Boulder City Veterans Center will benefit from the Trees 2000 project on Saturday when about 1,000 trees will be planted.
The tree planting ceremony is also part of Nevada Day weekend celebrations.
Trees 2000 is a project to plant drought-resistant trees and flowers for each resident to celebrate the millennium. For more information log onto www.trees2000.com.
Craft fair
The First Church of Religious Science is having its annual Craft Fair 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at 1420 E. Harmon Ave. There will be entertainment and treats. Call 739-8200.
Blind convention
The Nevada Council of the Blind will hold its 28th annual convention beginning with registration at 8:40 a.m. Saturday at the First Southern Baptist Church, 700 E. St. Louis Ave., Building C. Keynote address will be given by Charles Crawford, executive director of the American Council of the Blind. Call 737-5714 or 871-6890.
Variety show
The Henderson Community Church -- United Church of Christ Congregational -- will host a musical variety show 7 p.m. Saturday at 360 E. Horizon Drive. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted, with proceeds going toward kitchen equipment and furnishings for the new church building. For more information, call 565-8563.
Family festival
The Nevada Professional Empowering Parents Family Festival will be held 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the PEP Central office, 2810 W. Charleston Blvd., Suite G-68, in the Quail Park IV. To RSVP, call 388-8899.
