Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000 | 1:26 a.m.
Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesdays.
Last week the Las Vegas Country Club hosted its largest and most popular event of the year -- the 30th annual Member Guest Tournament.
Contested under idyllic weather conditions and on a course in pristine shape, the large field played better ball of partners the first day and combined low net the second.
The team of Rob Martinez and Jim Massey teamed to win overall honors, while the J.P. Oberweis-Bob Christensen pairing won overall low gross.
In the Hawaii Flight, Steve Rice and Marc Simay prevailed with a score of 202. The Gil Cohen-Jack McDonald duo placed second at 203 and taking third with 205 were Alan Andrews and Jack McCarthy.
Jim Abraham and Earl Meyers won the Samoan Flight with their 204. The pairings of Russ Olsen-Tom Tittle and Bill Weinberger-Phil Ward tied for second. Their scores were 206.
Tahiti Flight winners at 205 were Steve Gephardt and George Pancol. The Glenn Raynes-Ed Cisneros twosome placed second at 207, while in third spot with 210 were Marcus Erling and John Barber.
Jeff Harmon and Dan McCormick ham-and-egged it perfectly in winning the Tonga Flight with 205. Tommy Roberts and Howard Moss followed at 210, and third with 214 was the Steve Yamaguchi-Tom Blanchard pairing.
Winning overall was the Las Vegas Country Club team with a total of 248 points. Host team Red Rock placed second with 245 points, and taking third with 243 were the Spanish Trail and Canyon Gate Country Clubs.
Lee Fair (Spanish Trail), with 42 points, won low individual honors followed by Warren Peterson (LVCC) with 41, and Dean Hardy (Canyon Gate) who accumulated 39 points.
Low professional, with 39 points, was South Shore's Patrick Duty.
