Boxing: Ibeaubuchi ruling on Dec. 18
Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000 | 11:18 a.m.
District Judge Joseph Bonaventure will decide Dec. 18 if boxer Ike Ibeabuchi should be forcefully medicated into a competent state by mental health experts. Ibeabuchi is accused of sexually assault an outcall service dancer in July 1999, but he has been unable to stand trial because doctors have determined that he doesn't understand the charges against him and can't assist in his defense.
Doctors have recommended he be placed on medications, but Ibeabuchi has refused to take them. Deputy District Attorney Christopher Lalli said since Ibeabuchi won't take the pills orally, doctors could forcefully inject the medication.
However, defense attorney Richard Wright is opposed to the intravenous medication, citing side affects that could harm his boxing skills. Bonaventure will hear from Ibeabuchi on Dec. 18 in addition to expert testimony.
