CARSON CITY -- Fourteen lawyers, including Family Court Judge Robert Gaston, have applied to the state Judicial Selection Commission to succeed the late Clark County District Judge Gary Redmon.

Four of the applicants work for the Clark County district attorney's office, and two are Clark County public defenders.

The commission, headed by Chief Justice Robert Rose of the Nevada Supreme Court, will conduct interviews Nov. 13-14 in Las Vegas and narrow the list to three nominees. Their names will be submitted to Gov. Kenny Guinn, who will make the final selection.

Those who submitted their applications by the deadline Monday were Gaston, 61, a former assemblyman and currently a Family Court judge; David B. Barker, 41, Douglas W. Herndon, 36, Vicki J. Monroe, 50, and Abbi Silver, 35, all of the Clark County district attorney's office; Philip J. Kohn, 50, the Clark County special public defender; and James L. Gubler, 52, of the Clark County public defender's office.

Also in the running are private attorneys Kenneth C. Cory, 57, Allan R. Earl, 59, Robert J. Israel, 46, Michael C. Mills, 44, Robert A. Nersesian, 43, Kevin R. Utterback, 49, and Paul E. Wommer, 47.

The commission said it invites public comments on the qualifications. Comments should be sent to Karen Kavanau, commission secretary, Administrative Office of the Courts, Supreme Court Building, 201 S. Carson St., Suite, 250, Carson City, Nevada 89701, no later than Nov. 3.

All comments will be held confidential.

Redmon, 65, died Aug. 26, slightly more than two years after he underwent a heart transplant. He had been a district judge since January 1997.
