Starkville bar owner facing federal betting charges

Monday, Oct. 16, 2000 | 5:20 a.m.

The owner of Cheers, Nate Williamson, is being charged with illegal gambling, a federal crime.

"It was a joint investigation between the FBI and the Starkville Police Department looking into illegal gambling, which is bookmaking, taking bets on college sports, college football mostly," said Jeffery Artis, FBI media coordinator in the agency's Jackson office.

Artis said the investigation had been going on for a year.

Williamson did not return a phone message left Monday at his club.
