Ensign gloats over Bernstein flub, then flubs himself

Monday, Oct. 16, 2000 | 5:17 a.m.

Ensign also erred when he sarcastically told Bernstein, "Thank you for the specifics" and went on to answer the question he asked in efforts to show his grasp of statewide issues.

Bernstein stumbled before partially answering the Walker Lake question. Ensign then listed the Nevada and California counties involved in a longstanding dispute over the amount of Walker River water that flows into Walker Lake. But he got the California county wrong.

The error was caught by Democratic Party activists who gleefully pointed out Ensign flunked his own "geography test" by identifying the California county as Alpine. It's Mono County.

Ensign was correct on the Nevada counties, Mineral and Lyon. Bernstein didn't get the counties, but did name their principal towns, Hawthorne and Yerington.
