Online gambling system to be tested

Friday, Oct. 13, 2000 | 11:29 a.m.

A member of the Nevada Gaming Control Board denied a report that Coast Resorts Inc. has been approved to operate an on-line sports betting system in Nevada, saying the system is still going through the approval process.

Coast plans to launch on-line betting for Nevada residents within a week, the Wall Street Journal reported. But board member Dennis Neilander said the system's software has yet to be approved.

Coast will offer the betting service through a on-line system developed by Virtgame.com of San Diego. The Las Vegas company plans to mail about 20,000 marketing brochures promoting the service to Nevada sports gamblers on Monday, the Journal reported.

A 30-day field trial could be approved within the week, Neilander said, but this doesn't constitute final approval.

Coast and Virtgame first struck their deal to offer the service in January. The service allows sports bets to be placed through a closed-loop intranet system, accessible only to Coast Resorts account holders. The system cannot be accessed from outside the state.

The system will be the first on-line betting service in the United States.
