Police respond to mayor’s car burglary

Bad guys don't seem to get the breaks, especially when they target the mayor, who might be entitled to one or two of his own.

Sometime between 11 p.m. on Sept. 16 and 7:15 the next morning, someone smashed the driver-side window of a 1978 Mercedes-Benz convertible, which was parked in the driveway of Mayor Oscar Goodman's home.

Not an unusual event in a city where more than 42,000 property crimes are reported each year.

What was out of the ordinary was the police response.

At least four Las Vegas police officers went to the scene, including a police officer, a lieutenant from the department's intelligence section, an evidence technician and a latent fingerprint examiner.

Prints were gathered. So was a blood sample, which the perpetrator left behind. The blood was sent to a police lab for DNA analysis.

Twelve days later, the police found who they believe is their man: Fred Eugene Hogan.

Ever since - Sept. 29 - Hogan has been in police custody awaiting a hearing on a felony auto burglary charge.

The take: 26 cents and a busted windshield.
