Columnist Joe Delaney: Nevada Ballet Theatre welcomes Russian artists

Joe Delaney's column appears Thursdays and Fridays. Reach him at 259-4066 or [email protected].

The big local event this week is the Nevada Ballet Theatre's season opener, tonight through Sunday, in UNLV's Judy Bayley Theatre ... Artistic Director Bruce Steivel has prepared three ballet classics; "Fast Polonaise," danced to music once prepared for the coronation of a king; Choo San Goh's "In The Glow Of The Night," a contemporary work; and a bravura finale, the third act of "Sleeping Beauty."

In its 30th season, NBT welcomes three new members: Elena Shokhina (Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet), Piotr N. Ostaltsov (Leningrad State Academic Choreographic School), and Lev Radchenko (Kirov Ballet's Maryinsky Theatre). Each has extensive credits.

Vassili Sulich, co-founder of Nevada Dance Theatre, now Nevada Ballet Theatre, made his first radio appearance, announcing its formation on our KLAV 920-AM program from the Landmark in 1970.

Vanda Series opener

The Iceland Symphony Orchestra opens the 25th season of the prestigious UNLV Charles Vanda Master Series, Saturday at 8 p.m. in Artemus Ham Hall ... This is a remarkable, high-quality ensemble, considering that Iceland's population is approximately 260,000 ... Luciano Pavarotti, Andre Previn and Mstislav Rostropovich are among the major classical artists who have performed with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.

This year's American Tour features 26-year-old violinist Judith Ingolfsson and celebrates the 1,000th anniversary of Leif Ericsson's voyage to North America.

The late Charles Vanda was a brilliant tireless visionary who proved that Las Vegas would support classical music after a number of others had failed in their attempts to do so ... UNLV's Artemus Ham Hall was a major factor in Vanda's ability to attract major classical artists.

Star-policy rundown

It's George Carlin-Dennis Blair (Bally's); Gregg Allman (Blue Note Las Vegas); Clint Holmes plus Mac King (Harrah's); Bill Acosta (Luxor); Rodney Dangerfield, plus Rita Rudner, plus Tommy Tune starring in "EFX" (MGM Grand); Siegfried & Roy, plus Ray Romano (Mirage); Lance Burton (Monte Carlo); Smothers Brothers (Orleans); David Cassidy-Sheena Easton (Rio); Steve Wyrick (Sahara); Tony Orlando (Riviera); and Melinda, First Lady of Magic (Venetian).

Tony Orlando, pre-Dawn, was a successful music publisher for Columbia, now Sony Records ... James Taylor and Laura Nyro were among his signees ... He has an ear for songs with hit potential ... Check the catalogs, Tony, a new hit and the national Orlando party time starts anew.

Blue Man Group (Luxor) has settled in nicely for a multiyear run ... "Forever Plaid" (Flamingo) continues strong and deserves continuance even if a comedy troupe is added in Bugsy's Celebrity Theatre at the Flamingo Las Vegas.
