Columnist Peter Benton: Golfers mourn loss of Cobb
Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000 | 11:23 a.m.
Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.
The Las Vegas golfing community -- in fact all golfers in Nevada -- lost a true and valued friend last week with the passing of "Mr. Golf," Clyde Cobb.
Clyde was the founder and longtime president of the Southern Nevada Golf Association. He also was the catalyst who finally was able to unite and cement relations with the Las Vegas Chapter, Southwest Section of the PGA -- two entities that previously went their separate ways.
Apart from his honesty, sincerity and untiring efforts on behalf of anything and everything related to golf, Cobb will long be remembered as the man who rated our area courses and also implemented into Nevada the GHIN handicapping system, which all layouts now utilize for players' handicaps.
In 1991, the quick-witted and dedicated Cobb was unanimously elected, along with other first inductees Charlie Teel, Stuart Reid and Jerry Belt, into the newly formed Nevada Golf Hall of Fame.
On behalf of the Las Vegas golfing community, I would like to pass along sincere condolences to Clyde's family: Irvin W. Cobb, Clyde G. Cobb and daughters Sandra Bowker and Judith Blakenship.
Jo Montgomery, also of Hidden Valley, was the field's overall low net winner with a score of 139.
The tournament, played over the par-72 Hidden Valley Country Club, saw Pace (161) edge Julie Skinner (Los Prados) by a single stroke to capture low gross in the Junior flight (50-59). Barbara Berry (Hidden Valley) was third at 167.
Low net honors went to Donna Green (Hidden Valley) with 140, followed by Judy Sather (Wolf Run) and Spanish Trail's Linda Martin. Both ladies scored 142.
The Senior flight (60-69) victor in the gross segment of play was Doe Emes (Spanish Trail) who came in with 165. Second at 166 was Hidden Valley's Peggy Young and third at 184 was Ginny Young (Reno Women's).
Anne Wade (Hidden Valley) and her 140 took low net honors over Ann Aria (Sierra Sage), who placed second at 142. A stroke back in third spot was Jeanne Boylan (Hidden Valley).
Hat Cutler (Hidden Valley) and her 196 garnered low gross in the Super Senior flight (70-over). Fellow club members Joyce Quigley and Esthermae Haines, along with our Dolores Spomer (LV Municipal), shared low net with their 154s.
Chuck "The Hitman" Hiter, known for his extraordinary hand-eye coordination, will perform his trick shot routine.
Equipment will be provided for all juniors who attend.
