25 county attorneys interested in open judge post

Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000 | 11:05 a.m.

Twenty-five Clark County attorneys have picked up applications in the hopes of replacing the late District Judge Gary Redmon.

Clark County Court Administrator Chuck Short said the applicants have until 5 p.m. Monday to turn in the 20-page form.

Once the applications are turned in, background checks will be performed and interviews will be set up with a judicial selection committee chaired by Nevada Supreme Court Justice Bob Rose, Short said.

Many of the attorneys who have picked up applications are deputy district attorneys and public defenders, but a list of applicants will not be released until next week, Short said.

"We usually have 20 to 30 people pick up applications and usually less than half turn them in because it is several pages long," Short said.

The position has drawn many quality prospects, Short said.

Once the interviews are concluded, Short said, three names will be forwarded to Gov. Kenny Guinn. The governor will then have 30 days to make a selection.

Redmon, 65, died on Aug. 26, slightly more than two years after he underwent a heart transplant. He had been a district judge since January 1997.

Short said since Redmon's death, three senior judges have been sharing his caseload.
