Phony bills plague Nevada restaurants

Monday, Oct. 9, 2000 | 9:34 a.m.

Steve George, the office's director of communications, said someone has been sending the owners phony bills demanding payment.

"I've heard from at least eight restaurants in Carson City," he said, adding the office has received at least 25 inquiries about the phony bills from across northern Nevada.

At Incline Village, Cafe 333 owner Mary Young received a bill from United Pumping Co.

"I knew immediately that it had to be fake," she said. "It was for servicing the grease trap and I do that myself."

Managers at the China Wok in Incline Village said they received a phony bill for a Yellow Pages ad a while ago.

The U.S. Postal Inspector's office is searching for those responsible for the scam.
