The money from the U.S. Department of Energy will go into a combined research project by UNR, UNLV and the Desert Research Institute.
The three-year-old research facility in southern Nevada also hosts scientists from around the country and world who want to understand how global changes affect desert ecosystems.
Projects range from how global change will alter gene expression of desert plants to the use of remote sensing equipment on aircraft to examine large-scale changes in vegetation.
One project of particular interest to fire-conscious Nevada is a study of how gases like carbon dioxide affect the proliferation of cheatgrass in western ecosystems.
