UNLV to induct six, ‘90 Rebels into Hall
Friday, Oct. 6, 2000 | 2:22 a.m.
By romping to the NCAA title, the 1990 UNLV basketball team stamped itself as the greatest team in school history.
Tonight, UNLV will finally make it official.
Along with a talented cast of six former athletes and contributors, the '90 Rebels will be inducted into the UNLV Athletic Hall of Fame at 8 p.m. at the MGM Grand Premier Ballroom.
Former coach Jerry Tarkanian will attend, as will several players from the squad that went 35-5 and crushed Duke 103-73 for the NCAA title on April 2, 1990 at Denver's McNichols Arena.
In their respective fields, the other honorees greatly distinguished themselves.
"This class is special," Hall committee chairman Jerry Koloskie said. "It involves not only a great supporter and outstanding individuals who were groundbreakers in their respective sports, but also the school's most famous team -- one of the most successful in college basketball history."
Members of the 1990 Rebels slated to attend are Dave Rice, Travis Bice, Moses Scurry, Chris Jeter, Bryan Emerzian, Stacey Cvijanovich and assistant coach Cleveland Edwards.
"I'm proud to be a part of Rebels history and to be going into the Hall of Fame with my teammates," said Rice, a reserve guard on the team and a current UNLV assistant.
"It sounds like a cliche, but (winning the NCAA title) really was a team effort. It was something that all of Las Vegas and Southern Nevada took part in. It really galvanized the city. Even people who weren't basketball fans or sports fans got into it.
"Two teams before us got to the Final Four (1977, 1987) and fell a little short. We were finally able to win it all. I think that team became the benchmark for UNLV sports."
