Schedule: Wednesday, first-round qualifying, 5:05 p.m.; Thursday, second-round qualifying, 3 p.m.; Sunday, race (TBS, 10:10 a.m.)

Track: Lowe's Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns).

Race distance: 501 miles, 334 laps.

Last year: Jeff Gordon passed Bobby Labonte with seven laps to go to win.

Last race: Tony Stewart kept the lead through the final pit stops and held off charging Dale Earnhardt over the last 11 laps to win the NAPA 500 in Martinsville, Va.

Fast Facts: Five polesitters have won the race, but none since Harry Gant in 1982. ... Stewart has won the last two Winston Cup races. ... Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip lead with six wins apiece at Lowe's.

BUSCH GRAND NATIONAL

All Pro Bumper to Bumper 300

Site: Concord, N.C.

Schedule: Thursday, first-round qualifying, 10 a.m.; Friday, second-round qualifying, 9 a.m.; Saturday, race (TBS, 10:10 a.m.)

Track: Lowe's Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns).

Race distance: 300 miles, 200 laps.

Last year: Michael Waltrip took the lead midway through the final lap to win. It was his first Busch series victory in six years.

Last race: Matt Kenseth won the MBNA.com 200 in Dover, Del., his second in Busch competition at the track. It was his third win this season and 10th overall. Kenseth, who started 14th, took the top spot for the final time by passing Dave Blaney on the 161st of 200 laps. Kenseth went on to win by 1.842 seconds over Jason Keller, who won at Dover in June.

Fast Facts: Chevrolets have won the last three fall races at Lowe's. ... Kevin Harvick leads Ron Hornaday by 17 points in the rookie standings. ... Jeff Green leads the point standings by 516 over Keller.

FORMULA ONE

Japanese Grand Prix

Site: Suzuka, Japan.

Schedule: Friday, qualifying, (Speedvision, 9 p.m.); Sunday, race, (Speedvision, 9:30 p.m.)

Track: Suzuka Circuit (road course, 3.636 miles, 21 turns).

Race distance: 192.708 miles, 53 laps.

Last year: Mika Hakkinen won, clinching the championship for the second straight year. Eddie Irvine needed to finish ahead of Hakkinen to win the title, but came in third.

Last race: Michael Schumacher overwhelmed the field in the inaugural Formula One race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, winning the U.S. Grand Prix to take the lead in the standings. The crowd of more than 200,000 was the biggest in the history of the Grand Prix circuit. Schumacher beat Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello by 12.118 seconds for his second straight victory and seventh of the season.

Fast Facts: After this week, there is one race remaining in the season. ... Last year, the Japanese Grand Prix was the final event. ... Schumacher leads Hakkinen by eight points.

NATIONAL HOT ROD ASSOCIATION

Autozone Nationals

Site: Memphis, Tenn.

Schedule: Friday, first-round qualifying 11 a.m.; Saturday, second-round qualifying, 8 a.m.; Sunday, final eliminations, 8 a.m.

Track: Memphis Motorsports Park.

Last year: Tommy Johnson Jr. defeated Tony Pedregon in the Funny Car finals. Doug Herbert, Mike Edwards, Angelle Seeling and Brad Jeter also won their pro categories.

Last event: Gary Scelzi broke an NHRA record with his seventh Top Fuel victory of the season, taking the Auto Parts Nationals in Topeka, Kan. John Force (Funny Car), Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) and Bob Panella (Pro Stock Truck) also were winners in their categories.

Fast facts: There are two events remaining after this week. ... Records were set in four of the six pro categories last year. ...

CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

Last race: Kurt Busch, who wrecked his primary truck in practice, came from last place to pass Mike Wallace and win the inaugural NASCAR truck series race at Dover Downs International Speedway. Busch took the lead by passing a spinning Wallace on the 198th lap of the MBNA E-Commerce 200.

Next race: O'Reilly 400, Oct. 13, Fort Worth, Texas.

CHAMPIONSHIP AUTO RACING TEAMS

Last race: Jimmy Vasser, the 1996 series champion, pulled away from teammate Juan Montoya at the end and picked up the ninth victory of his career, winning the Houston Grand Prix. Vasser had not won since a season-ending victory in 1998 in Fontana, Calif.

Next race: Honda Indy 300, Oct. 15, Surfers Paradise, Australia.

INDY RACING LEAGUE

Last race: Buddy Lazier won the inaugural Belterra Resort Indy 300 in Sparta, Ky. Lazier took the lead for good 31 laps from the end of the 200-lap event, moving to the top when rookie Sarah Fisher made her final pit stop. Polesitter Scott Goodyear finished second with Fisher third.

Next race: Mall.com 500, Oct. 15, Fort Worth, Texas.
