Suspect in attack on child is arrested in Nevada
Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000 | 9:25 a.m.
Arthur Ray "Bubba" Martinez, 32, was arrested in Mesquite about 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, Ogden police Lt. Dan Greenhalgh said.
Martinez had been free on $40,000 bail pending a Nov. 15 trial on charges that he kidnapped and raped a 14-year-old girl who was supposed to baby-sit for him.
Police say the girl was kidnapped sometime after she left a friend's apartment in Ogden late Tuesday.
Martinez was at the same apartment visiting a friend, said police Lt. Marcy Korgenski.
Police believe that at some point during the night, the girl was taken to another apartment and sexually assaulted.
The girl was put into a clothing trunk, which was put in a car trunk and taken to the apartment of another friend of Martinez's, Korgenski said.
The girl had been in the trunk for several hours before the friend heard noises coming from the trunk and notified police at 2:52 a.m. Wednesday.
Considering the circumstances, Korgenski said, the girl's condition is as good as can be expected.
"She's 11 years old and something like this has happened to her," Korgenski said. "How good could she be?"
The girl was treated at a hospital and released.
