Sun Athletes of the Week
Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000 | 10:49 a.m.
Named on Oct. 5, 2000
Male Athlete of the Week: ALEX DEVAUGHN
School: Foothill
Class: Junior
Sport: Football
Last week: DeVaughn, the Falcons' starting quarterback, rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another as Foothill upended previously unbeaten Chaparral 27-24 Thursday night. With his team trailing 21-14 in the fourth quarter, DeVaughn found Pedro Encinosa for a 53-yard touchdown pass. Then, with 28 seconds remaining, DeVaughn faked a handoff and sprinted two yards into the endzone for the winning score. "He has great determination, and he's a great competitor," Falcons coach Ray Fenton said. "He's a guy who truly hates to lose. He did a good job being a leader, especially for a junior in his first year in our program."
Female Athlete of the Week: VICTORIA HARPER
School: Valley
Class: Sophomore
Sport: Tennis
Last week: Harper, the Vikings' top singles player, went 7-0 to lead her squad to league victories over Rancho, Moapa Valley and Las Vegas. With those wins, which included a tough 12.5-10 triumph against the Rams, Valley climbed into a tie with Rancho for first place in the Northeast Division with one week remaining in the regular season. For the season, Harper is a perfect 18-0 in league play as a singles and doubles player. "She's a good athlete, and she's got a killer forehand," Valley coach Debbie Wilson said. "The team looks to her as a solid player who is usually going to win."
