Senate candidates plan debate series

U.S. Senate candidates John Ensign and Ed Bernstein have scheduled at least three televised debates and a joint appearance at a candidates' forum starting next week.

The first debate will air on KVBC Channel 3 on Tuesday from 9 to 10:30 p.m. from the Clark County Library on East Flamingo Road.

Republican Ensign and Democrat Bernstein are also penciled in for a candidates' forum for Sun City Summerlin residents at the Desert Vista Community Center at 10360 Sun City Blvd. beginning 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The two candidates will meet again in a debate at UNLV that will be televised by KLVX Channel 10 from 8 to 9 p.m., Oct. 15. The final debate will air on KLAS Channel 8 on Nov. 5, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

A poll taken this week on behalf of the gaming industry had former Rep. Ensign ahead of attorney Bernstein 50 percent to 40 percent, which is consistent with most other recent polls conducted on the race. When the four minor party candidates were added to the mix, Ensign was shown leading 46 percent to 35 percent.

The winner of the Nov. 7 general election contest will replace retiring Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev.

Parent meeting

School Board member Lois Tarkanian, who is running for the Clark County Commission, is holding a parent advisory meeting at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 12, at Fong Elementary School, 2200 James Bilbray Drive.

School District Superintendent Carlos Garcia will be the guest speaker.

Tarkanian, who represents District E in the northwest portion of the Las Vegas Valley, is running as a Democrat against Republican businessman Chip Maxfield in a high-profile general election contest to represent the county commission's District C.
