Eldorado gets nod to squeak past Chaparral
Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000 | 11:57 a.m.
Mega-upsets by Foothill and Basic contributed to a 5-5 week, though things could have been worse had Cimarron and Clark not come through late. Look for a return to normalcy this week.
WEEK SIX
Friday's games
ELDORADO (4-1) at CHAPARRAL (4-1), 7 p.m.
The Cowboys' stunning home loss to Foothill took some of the luster off this nonleague matchup, but it still has potential to be among the season's best games. The Sundevils' pass defense will be tested by Chap QB Dallas Dobbs, but it's Eldorado's Steven Jackson who will decide this one.
Pick -- Eldorado 27, Chaparral 21
DESERT PINES (5-0, 1-0) at LAS VEGAS (1-4, 0-1), 7 p.m.
Time to find out exactly how good the Jags really are. Their first road game will pit them against a Wildcats squad eager to get back into the win column after four straight defeats. Look for LVHS' superior size up front to be the difference.
Pick -- Las Vegas 20, Desert Pines 14
SILVERADO (3-2, 1-0) at GREEN VALLEY (3-2, 0-1), 7 p.m.
Last week's shocker at Basic brought the Gators back down to earth, while the Skyhawks finally appear to be hitting their stride, especially on defense.
Pick -- Silverado 25, Green Valley 13
WESTERN (2-3, 0-0) at DURANGO (1-4, 0-1), 7 p.m.
This one looked great in the preseason but both teams are shadows of their 1999 selves.
Pick -- Western 22, Durango 14
PALO VERDE (3-2, 0-0) at MOJAVE (1-4, 0-1), 7 p.m.
The Rattlers' best chance to get back into the Northwest playoff race, with wins against Cimarron and Cheyenne unlikely.
Pick -- Palo Verde 21, Mojave 14
VALLEY (3-2, 0-0) at RANCHO (1-4, 0-1), 7 p.m.
Rams QB D.J. Porter still isn't 100 percent, so look for the Vikes' defense to have a field day.
Pick -- Valley 33, Rancho 7
BISHOP GORMAN (3-2, 1-0) at CLARK (2-3, 1-0), 7 p.m.
The Chargers spotted Bonanza a 14-3 lead. That won't work against the Gaels.
Pick -- Gorman 41, Clark 24
CENTENNIAL (1-4, 1-0) at CIMARRON-MEMORIAL (5-0, 1-0), 7 p.m.
After a tough test against Cheyenne, Spartans take out their aggression.
Pick -- Cimarron 49, Centennial 7
BASIC (1-4, 1-0) at FOOTHILL (3-1, 1-0), 7 p.m.
A rather unlikely battle for first place in the Southeast.
Pick -- Foothill 24, Basic 17
BONANZA (0-5) at CHEYENNE (3-2), 7 p.m.
Ouch.
Pick -- Cheyenne 44, Bonanza 6
Last week: 5-5 Season: 38-15 (.717)
