Grants available for community projects

The city of Las Vegas is offering grants of up to $1,000 to youths 11 to 18 years old who create original projects for their neighborhoods.

The youths must work with a registered neighborhood association and must match the city money with cash, volunteer labor or supplies. Applications for the Youth Neighborhood Association Partnership Program are available beginning Monday.

Grant-writing workshops will be held this month and next month. For more information, call 229-2330.

Workshop highlights special programs

The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers free hikes and walks, but reservations must be made by calling 363-1922.

Some of the programs coming up:

Desert Mysteries: A workshop Friday on Red Rock Canyon through a magnifying glass. Participants will look close up at plants, rocks, insects, feathers and even snake skin to learn more about the desert world. A hand lens and craft materials will be provided.

SMYC Trail Nature Hike: A 1 1/2-mile moderate hike Saturday for adults close to sandstone cliffs, juniper and pinion pine. Ride-sharing is required to return to the vehicles.

Robber's Roost and Desert View: Moderately strenuous half-mile hike Saturday for 10-year-olds to adults to explore shallow caves that served as hideouts for bandits. Trip includes rocky and steep trail.

Tracking the Bighorn Sheep: Four-mile moderately strenuous hike for 12-year-olds to adults to track bighorns through Sandstone Canyon Saturday to the top of Gateway Canyon. Some rock scrambling involved.

Meditation lecture scheduled Tuesday

The Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services on Tuesday will offer a free lecture, "Meditation and Relaxation: A Practical Approach for Dealing with Everyday Stress."

The event, scheduled at 7 p.m., will be held at the West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd. Rilo Wiesner, R.N., will present this lecture.

Hispanic Leadership

The Hispanic Leadership Summit of Nevada will host a free workshop 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Moyer Student Union at UNLV. The workshop will cover business, civil rights and political empowerment of Hispanics in Nevada.

Credit counseling

A free class, "Managing Credit in the Millennium," is being offered 6-7 p.m. Tuesday by Consumer Credit Counseling Service, 3650 S. Decatur Blvd., Suite 32. To register, call 364-0344.

Shrine Circus

The Zelzah Shrine will sponsor its Millennium Shrine Circus 4:30-8 p.m. Oct. 12 and 13 in Sunset Station's parking lot (under the big top), at the corner of Sunset Road and Stephanie Street, Henderson. For more information, call 382-5554.
