Big Vegas carrier not awarding bonuses

PHOENIX -- Hit by rising fuel costs and costly flight cancellations, America West Airlines said it won't award bonuses to non-union employees for the first time in five years. America West is the second-busiest airline at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.

Nearly 6,000 employees split $23 million in bonus pay in March, based on the carrier's profits last year. That averaged $3,853 per employee.

This year, airline officials said fuel expenses increased 56.6 percent in the first half of 2000 compared with last year.

The company also will fall short of reaching $194 million in operating income this year -- the point at which bonuses would be awarded, said Chairman William Franke.
