A convicted sex offender has pleaded guilty, but mentally ill, to sexual incidents involving two Summerlin Hospital and Medical Center patients in May 1999.
District Judge Jeffrey Sobel set an Oct. 23 hearing when he will determine whether Roy Alan O'Guinn was mentally ill at the time of the offenses.
A finding that he was mentally ill would entitle O'Guinn to receive certain medical services in prison.
O'Guinn pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of burglary and two counts of sexual assault involving a victim 65 years or older, all felonies, and one count of open and gross lewdness, a gross misdemeanor.
The plea agreement calls for him to be sentenced to multiple counts of life in prison with eligibility for parole beginning after 10 years. The terms are to be served concurrently.
Summerlin Hospital security guards apprehended O'Guinn, 39, after a nurse found a man sexually assaulting an elderly woman, police said. The man tried to run but was caught. The woman was the second patient attacked that evening.
