Task force gives safety report

Despite concerns raised last month by Sheriff Jerry Keller, county commissioners accepted a report Tuesday from the 2-month-old Park Safety Task Force.

The task force's report offered the following recommendation: "Initiate a strategic planning process for park safety in which the mission, goals and service level expectations of the Park Police Division are first clarified, and then clear and consistent operational strategies are subsequently established."

Longer work days being considered

The hours of business at the County Government Center might soon be changing to better serve customers.

Most departments are open between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, but because some residents are not able to get to the government center before 5 p.m., County Commissioner Erin Kenny suggested adjusting hours.

Some departments are considering 10-hour days and four-day weeks in different shifts. Unlike the cities of Henderson and North Las Vegas, however, the county will remain open five days a week.

Transition panel receives approval

Clark County commissioners agreed Tuesday to an interlocal agreement to establish a transition management committee in preparation for the creation of a new regional air quality agency.

The interlocal agreement -- which has already been approved by Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson -- will provide $150,000 to be used for cost analysis in creating the new agency.

The idea to create an independent agency separate from the Clark County Health District emerged from an environmental advisor committee, which studied methods to help improve air quality in Southern Nevada. It made its recommendation in January.
