Columnist Peter Benton: Golf festival to be held Sunday

Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000 | 11:49 a.m.

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

A festival of golf is scheduled for Sunday at the Angel Park Golf Club from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. when the Las Vegas Golf Expo presented by United Nissan comes to town.

New clubs from just about every manufacturer can be tested. There will be putters to putt with, professionals to talk to, free golf lessons, a hole in one challenge available to all and a raffle to beat all raffles, with prizes including golf clubs, weekends away, rounds of golf, dinners, show tickets and much, much more.

Local PGA Tour golfer Eddie Fryatt will be in attendance, as well as UNLV golf coach Dwaine Knight and Dennis Silvers, host of radio's 19th Hole golf show.

A long drive demonstration by national long-driving qualifiers Joey Gallian and Greg Stafford is also scheduled, and the first 100 attendees will receive a free ticket to the upcoming Invensys Classic PGA Tour stop.

All proceeds will benefit the Las Vegas DARE program. Admission is free. For further information, call 254-4653.

His rounds of 66-63-69--198 over the par-70 layout brought his number of consecutive rounds under par to 29, eclipsing the record of 27 which was shared by Lee Trevino (1992), Bruce Summerhays (1995) and Ray Floyd (1995).

He figures that if enough of his long-lost friends can get together, a golf tournament will be arranged -- at the Desert Inn, of course -- followed by an evening of reminiscing, etc.

Full information is available by calling Ken at 385-5227.

The Tour Policy Board recently decided that a player's rookie year is the season in which he plays his 10th event as a PGA Tour member or finishes in the top 125 on the official money list -- whichever comes first.

A breakdown of the eight rookie tour players presently in the top 125 following Maruyama are:

Michael Clark, $814,456; Brad Elder, $631,878; local Eddie Fryatt (who started the season well but has cooled off of late), $590,585; Matt Gogel, $530,698; Gary Nicklaus, $403,982; Jerry Smith, $394,180; Mathew Goggin, $358,030; and Craig Spence, $341,049.

From all accounts, this layout is one of the most unique golf courses in southern Utah. The views it provides along with the playability and challenge makes Coral Canyon one of the top courses in the area.

The 7,029-yard, par-72 layout is located just minutes from I-15, off the Zion National Park exit near St. George.

Tee times are available at this daily-fee golf club by calling (435) 688-1700.
