State touts prepaid tuition plan

Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 | 10:05 a.m.

State officials are reminding families of Nevada's prepaid tuition program, saying the Millennium Scholarship launched this year does not reduce the need for planning ahead for children's education.

State Treasurer Brian Krolicki read stories Friday to first graders from Paradise Elementary School at a local bookstore and urged students to ask their parents how they plan to pay for their higher education.

The prepaid tuition program, in its third year with about 6,000 children enrolled, encourages parents or relatives to save for children's college costs by guaranteeing to cover full tuition at a Nevada college or university for those who participate.

The Millennium Scholarship, which started this year with up to 3,500 recipients, provides up to $10,000 in scholarship money to Nevada students who graduate from high school with at least a B average.

The Millennium Scholarship was designed to work with the prepaid tuition program, David Clapsaddle, executive director of the prepaid tuition program, said. Students in the prepaid tuition program who also receive a Millennium Scholarship can use the scholarship money toward other college-related costs, he said.

Prepaid tuition is guaranteed to cover the costs of Nevada tuition but can be used for out-of-state colleges and universities, as well.
