Mohegans tribal council elects new chairman

Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 | 2:40 a.m.

Brown, a former Norwich police officer, said his leadership would mean a "seamless transition" for Mohegan Sun casino customers and state and local governments.

The tribe will continue its $950 million expansion of the casino to include more gaming space, a convention center, a 1,500-room hotel and other amenities. The project is scheduled to be completed in October 2001.

Brown said he would improve communication between the tribal council and the 1,400 tribal members, but he said he would oppose increasing the twice-yearly stipend that members get.

"I am not going to increase stipends right now, because we have to pay down debt," Brown said, adding that the stipends may be restructured after a tribal membership meeting Sunday.

Brown was the top vote-getter in the tribal election in August, and became chairman by a vote of the nine-member tribal council. He has been on the tribal council for five years.

Harris, who led the tribe for five years through the casino construction and plans for its expansion, remains a member of the council.

Ralph Sturges, the Mohegans' chief, said he expects a smooth transition.

"I don't think there will be any overwhelming changes," Sturges said. "It won't change the casino operation or the building operation, I'm sure."
