Cox alliances in Las Vegas

Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000 | 11:14 a.m.

Cox Communications' Las Vegas operation offers Excite@Home as well as ExpressNet as an e-mail and Internet-surfing product, but Vice President Steve Schorr considers it a value-added feature.

Excite@Home is an exclusive provider with an agreement with the local cable operation through June 2002. ExpressNet is Cox's own brand product.

"What you're buying with the service is the access," Schorr said. "You're paying for the speed. You get ExpressNet or Excite@Home as a plus. If you don't want that, you can set up your computer to use some other home page, like Intuit or Yahoo! If you set it up to use AOL or any other paid-for product, you do have to pay them, but it's your choice."

Schorr said the cable industry is opposed to the government forcing it to provide access, preferring to let the free market work.

The Greenspun family, owner of the Las Vegas Sun, is a minority investor in the Las Vegas Cox system.
