Work on monorail to begin — finally
Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000 | 4:04 a.m.
Construction of a $650 million, 3.8-mile Strip monorail was expected to start Tuesday.
Workers planned to start with the demolition and grading of an employee parking lot at the Sahara hotel-casino.
The plan is to extend the current 1-mile monorail, which runs from the MGM Grand to Bally's, north to the Sahara.
The private project is being financed through $650 million in state-issued bonds that were approved in September by Gov. Kenny Guinn and other members of the state Board of Finance.
As work starts, directors of the nonprofit Las Vegas Monorail Co. are reviewing the agency's $141.8 million budget proposal for 2001.
The board will forward the proposal to Guinn for final approval before the end of the year, a company official said.
