Meetings set on school zones

Monday, Nov. 27, 2000 | 11:37 a.m.

The Attendance Zone Advisory Commission this week continues working on preliminary plans that will affect a series of elementary, middle and high schools.

On Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the education center, 2832 E. Flamingo Road, the commission will discuss preliminary zoning considerations for elementary schools and a middle school.

The first area may involve elementary school students living north of Ann Road to Rancho Drive, east of Rancho to Craig Road, south of Craig to Union Pacific Railroad, east of the railroad to Lamb Boulevard.

For this area, the commission will establish four boundaries for four new elementary schools and evaluate existing zones for Allen, Elizondo, May, Antonello, Rhodes, Wolfe, Guy and Neal elementary schools.

Another area has potential impact for students living south of Charleston Boulevard to Boulder Highway, east of Boulder Highway to Flamingo Road and north of Flamingo Road, including apartments at 4600-4898 E. Charleston Boulevard.

The commission is studying boundaries for one new elementary school and will evaluate existing zones for the Stanford, Dearing, Wengert, Hal Smith, Long, Goldfarb, Mendoza and Cunningham elementary schools.

The commission also will discuss its options for the attendance boundaries of four new middle schools. Additionally, the attendance zones for Molasky, Lied, West, Brinley, Martin, Keller, Von Tobel, O'Callaghan, Bridger, Swainston, R.O. Gibson, Robison, J.D. Smith, Johnson and Rogich middles schools will be discussed.

Finally, the commission will evaluate the existing attendance zones for Ferron and Harris elementary schools, which may affect students in those two zones who live south of Flamingo Road and north of Tropicana Avenue.

On Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the education center, the commission will evaluate the attendance zone boundaries of Palo Verde, Centennial, Las Vegas, Eldorado and Bonanza high schools, along with the attendance zones for Lincoln and Herron elementary schools and Clyde Cox, Wooley, Lowman and Manch elementary schools.

The commission, a panel of parents and concerned citizens appointed by the Clark County School Board, annually reviews attendance boundaries to account for enrollment shifts and the opening of new schools.

The school district sends notices to parents of students who are affected by any potential changes.
