NLV officers probe accident
North Las Vegas Police are investigating what caused a 56-year-old man to drive his car across oncoming traffic lanes and crash into a parked van Sunday afternoon.
Steven A. Perry of North Las Vegas died at the scene after crashing his 1994 Kia into a van in the 1800 block of West Cartier Avenue near Civic Center Drive about 1:45 p.m., police said.
Perry was headed west on Cartier when he veered across the eastbound lanes and into the van, police said.
Police are investigating if alcohol or some kind of sudden ailment may have played a part in the accident.
Officials probe cause of fire
Metro homicide detectives and Clark County Fire Department officials continued today to investigate a mobile home fire that left an 87-year-old women dead Friday evening.
The cause of the 5:30 p.m. fire at the River Oaks Senior Mobile Home Community, 5300 E. Desert Inn Road, was still unknown this morning, and investigators were uncertain why the victim was unable to escape the home, Clark County Fire Department spokesman Bob Leinbach said.
The elderly woman had not been identified this morning, according to the Clark County coroner's office.
The victim's relatives -- two men, a woman and a 10-year-old boy -- all escaped the blaze at the complex near Nellis Boulevard, fire officials said.
"We did notice there was a wheelchair ramp at the home, so we thought the victim may have been wheelchair-bound, but it turned out that the victim's sister is the one who uses a wheelchair," Leinbach said.
Burglary suspect trips himself up
RENO -- A burglary suspect remained hospitalized Saturday after being struck by a police car on its way to assist in a foot chase.
Police said Bradley McKaig, 22, of Reno will be booked into the Washoe County Jail upon his release from Washoe Medical Center.
McKaig suffered a broken clavicle and a collapsed lung in the accident Friday afternoon on McCarran Boulevard at Clearacre Lane.
Police said the suspect ran after trying to pawn stolen merchandise at a northeast Reno pawnshop, and was injured when he tripped and fell in front of the police car.
Domestic abuse is topic of talk
The Nevada Domestic Violence Prevention Council will discuss the needs of immigrant victims of domestic violence Friday in Las Vegas.
The 10 a.m. meeting will be held at the Sawyer State Office Building, 555 E. Washington Ave.
The council's mission is to encourage the elimination of domestic violence and sexual assault in Nevada by assisting prevention programs.
Teacher may be kept off panel
MINDEN -- The Douglas County School District has filed a lawsuit seeking to keep a Douglas High School teacher off the School Board.
Randy Green, a teacher at the school for 23 years, was elected to the board by a wide margin Nov. 7.
But the Douglas District Court lawsuit claims Green cannot be both a teacher and a member of the board that employs him.
"(It will) set a precedent thereby allowing or encouraging other employees of school districts throughout Nevada ... to simultaneously serve as board members," the lawsuit says.
Such employees collectively bargain over salary and compensation issues, the suit notes.
The school district seeks to stop county Clerk-Treasurer Barbara Reed from administering the oath of office unless Green resigns as a teacher.
The school board unanimously voted to file the lawsuit Nov. 14.
Elderly man held in wife's death
SPARKS -- An elderly man was arrested on suspicion of trying to suffocate his wife twice at a senior care facility.
Eugene Bogle was arrested Friday for investigation of two counts of attempted murder.
He's accused of trying to suffocate his 77-year-old wife, Carrie Bogle, by placing a plastic bag and pillow over her face.
Bogle was confronted after the first incident at Washoe Progressive Care on Oddie Boulevard and told to leave, but he ignored the request, police said.
His wife received immediate medical attention to assist with her breathing.
