Letter: School zones could be safer

But when I travel to other cities, such as Oakland, Calif., and see school zone traffic signs that say "when children are present," it reminds me that most of Clark County's school zone traffic signs apply absolutely, without regard to presence of children.
My recommendation to the appropriate authorities is that Clark County's school zone traffic signs apply "when children are present." Traffic would not have to come to a crawl, or perhaps 15 miles per hour, when there is no human in sight, just fences, school buildings and parking lots.
This would add a few hours to everyone's year and allow us to concentrate on traffic safety when it counts, when children are visible, coming and going, or playing in the area.
