CARSON CITY -- Assemblyman Tom Collins, D-North Las Vegas, says he "hopes the Legislature has the guts" to approve increased taxes this session to pay for lagging mental health services, education and salary increases for state workers.
County supervisors undecided about casino
A telephone poll conducted by the Beloit Daily News showed seven of the county's 29 supervisors in favor of building a casino, 12 opposed and 10 undecided. For the casino to pass, 15 supervisors must vote for it.

Editorial: Nevada is unkind to disabled
Granted, the Nevada Legislature has been trying to play catch-up with the state's mental health budget ever since then-Gov. Bob Miller made severe budget cuts in response to a recession in the early 1990s. But as of 1998 we were still spending only $1.05 for every $1,000 of personal income on services for the mentally retarded and developmentally disabled, less than one-third the national average of $3.69. In a state with such a healthy economy that is pitiful.

Letter: School vouchers offer choice in education
The Sun then goes on to say it "does not buy" the argument that choice would improve the public schools because they would be forced to compete with private schools. That is not an argument. It is historic fact. Choice in education has existed in several countries around the world for decades. In every case one thing has been consistent: The public school system remains the dominant choice of the vast majority of parents. Why? Because it does indeed compete and does so quite successfully.
