Letter: Phoning schools doesn’t help

Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000 | 8:29 a.m.

It really gripes me when professionals such as those in our school district tell you directly on the local news that if you have any questions regarding Clark County schools, call them.

Try reporting kids skipping school, and see how frustrating it is. Every day I see kids skipping class at Mojave High School at 7 a.m., and there is no one available to report it to.

This is probably true all over the valley. It seems most offices open at 8 a.m. North Las Vegas Police do not handle these calls and refer you to school police.

School security refers you to the truant officer, who is never answering calls at 7 a.m. The kids ditching are rarely caught, yet our teachers seem to catch all the blame as to children not being educated.

Kids cannot learn if they are absent without leave. I believe our new superintendent better take a closer look at these irregularities if he expects any help from the public.

Personally, I have stopped reporting any school irregularities to a defunct system. Your existing system just is not functioning at 80 percent, Mr. Superintendent, and something or someone needs to be changed.
