Event planned for Pathways shelter
The Las Vegas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is hosting the Delta Ganza Weekend of Health and Beauty beginning with A Night of Beauty 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Salvation Army Pathways Women's Shelter, 37 W. Owens Ave.
The event will feature makeovers and grooming for the women of Pathways; health information available at the Vons store on Owens Avenue Saturday; and a fashion show and luncheon on Sunday at Emerald Gardens, 891 S. Rampart Blvd. Call 369-1012.
Special holiday project scheduled
An animal adoption program entitled Homes Before the Holidayswill be held noon-6 p.m. Saturday in the Holiday Glories Store outside of Neiman Marcus on level one at the Fashion Show mall.
The Holiday Glories Store will be filled with many loving dogs and cats awaiting adoption. Adoption fees apply. For more information, call Anne Yendrek at 731-3636.
Henderson plans competition
The Henderson Commemorative Beautification Commission is accepting entries for its annual outdoor holiday decorating contest now through Dec. 5.
The contest is open to any resident, group or business located within Henderson city limits. Entries will be limited to the first 50 received.
Entries will be judged by members of the beautification commission 6:30-10:30 p.m. Dec. 11. Winners will be announced at 7:15 p.m. following the city's tree-lighting ceremony on Dec. 14.
To obtain an entry form for the holiday decorating contest, call the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department at 566-2289.
No tours on Thanksgiving Day
Hoover Dam tour guides will get Thanksgiving off this year.
The Hoover Dam Visitors Center will be closed on Thursday so that its staff can spend the holiday with their families.
It will be open again on Friday and tours will start at 8 a.m. and the last tour will be at 5:45 p.m. The dam will also be closed on Christmas Day.

More help needed during holidays
The Clark County chapter of the Red Cross needs money to help victims of residential fires.
Red Cross volunteers respond to hundreds of emergencies each year to help the victims cope with the situation.
House fires are one such emergency, and they peak during the holiday season. Volunteers help displaced families throughout the holidays.
The organization recently spent about $1,000 helping a family with urgent needs such as food and clothing after their home burned.
The Red Cross provides these emergency services free and relies heavily on donations from the community so that it continue to help.

County agency wins two awards
The Clark County Regional Flood Control District recently received two awards from the Association of State Dam Safety Officials and the City-County Communications and Marketing Association.
The flood control district was given the dam safety association's 2000 West Regional Award of Merit for outstanding contributions to regional dam safety.
City-County Communications and Marketing Association recognized the flood control district with its Award of Excellence for a 30-minute program on flood safety education.
A free computer class
is being offered at 6 p.m. Nov. 29 at the North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive. Learn how to work a computer, how to use software and the ABCs of computers. This program will be conducted in English and Spanish.
A Pilot Town Meeting
for general aviation pilots will be held 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cashman Center, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North. The meeting is open to all pilots without charge. For more information, call (301) 695-2159.
