Buckley named first woman majority leader

Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000 | 10:34 a.m.

Assemblywoman Barbara Buckley, D-Las Vegas, has been appointed majority leader for the 2001 Legislature -- the first woman in the state's history selected to that important lower house post.

Speaker Richard Perkins, D-Henderson, made the announcement of the appointment Tuesday, noting that Buckley "is an extraordinarily talented legislator who has gained the respect of both sides of the aisle."

As part of her duties, Buckley, who is entering her fourth term, will work closely with Perkins to manage the Assembly, set the agenda for the Democratic caucus, oversee the work of the committee chairmen and guide the work on the floor of the Assembly.

Perkins, entering his fifth term, was selected speaker by the Democratic Caucus on Nov. 7, succeeding Assemblyman Joe Dini, D-Yerington, who was speaker for a record eight sessions. Dini was selected by Perkins to chair the Assembly Commerce Committee, succeeding Buckley, who held that post in the 1999 session.

The Democrats hold 27 of the 42 Assembly seats.
