Baby killed in car-stroller crash

A 5-month-old baby died Monday afternoon when a car drove onto a sidewalk and hit the child's mother and the stroller the baby was in.

Tanya Cokley, 38, was pushing her son, Zalachi Cokley, in a stroller, along the southern sidewalk of Flamingo Road west of Eastern Avenue about 11:30 a.m., Metro Police said.

A 1995 Nissan driven by Mark Min, 47, of Las Vegas, was headed east on Flamingo in the right travel lane, when the car veered onto the sidewalk, striking Cokley and the stroller from behind. The impact threw the infant from the stroller, police said.

Both victims were taken to University Medical Center, where the infant died and Tanya Cokley remains in serious condition.

No charges have been filed in the case, as detectives continue to investigate the accident.

Names of victims made public

Police released today the names of four people killed Saturday night in a head-on collision between a pick-up truck and a sport utility vehicle on U.S. 95 near the Nevada-California border.

Christina Schultz, 20, and Sara Petersen, 21, both of Simi Valley, Calif., were killed instantly when a northbound 1996 Dodge pick-up driven by Bryan Boekweg, 28, crossed the double yellow line and collided with their 2001 Ford Sport-trac, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred at the crest of a hill 1 1/2 miles south of the Nevada state line around 8 p.m., police said.

Boekweg, of Ogden, Utah, died at the scene. Four other passengers in the pick-up were taken to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where one, 13-year-old Brandi Barker, died Sunday morning. Sherry Boekweg, 40, Daniele Boekweg, 7, and Derrek Castillo, 9, remained in fair condition this morning, a UMC spokesman said.

The accident remains under investigation, a CHP spokesman said.

4,200 to receive Millennium money

CARSON CITY -- The Millennium Scholarship program has met its goal of 60 percent participation for the first year.

Gov. Kenny Guinn, who developed the program using tobacco settlement money coming to the state, said Monday he was gratified so many students participated. The scholarships are for Nevada high school graduates who earned "B" averages and are continuing their educations through the state university and college system.

There were 7,184 students eligible beginning this and 4,291 applied and received scholarships.

State Treasurer Brian Krolicki, whose office runs the program, called this a tremendous response from high school students.

Millennium Scholarship winners receive up to $2,500 a year.

Woman arrested in April slaying

The Las Vegas Criminal Apprehension Team arrested a woman Monday in connection with the April death of a man whose body was found in a trash bin.

Terry Alison Peters, 27, surrendered to authorities through her attorney, after being indicted last week by the Clark County grand jury on charges of murder and accessory to murder in connection with the April 21 killing of Daniel Nichols.

Nichols, 38, was found beaten and strangled to death in a trash bin in the area of 2575 Westwind Road.

Samuel Ralph Wilson, 34, was also named in the indictment and had already been taken into custody, police said.
