Lady Rebels win opener

About the only good sign UNLV women's basketball coach Regina Miller saw in the Lady Rebels' season opener Monday night was her players' reaction to their 57-41 victory over Texas-San Antonio at the Thomas & Mack.
"It was one of those games you just shake off," senior forward Brooke Ingalls said. "I wish we could start over right now, start the clock right now, like we do in practice and keep working."
UNLV (1-0) built a 33-16 halftime lead against the Roadrunners (0-2), but got sloppy on both ends of the court in the second half.
"One positive thing about tonight is that they're not satisfied with their overall performance; we know that we're capable of playing much better than we did tonight," Miller said.
"I think the team realizes that we didn't play, for 40 minutes, to our capabilities. When I walked into the locker room, I asked them if they were satisfied and everyone said 'no.' To me, that's a good sign. We know that we're better and that we can perform better."
For 20 minutes Monday, the Lady Rebels appeared not to miss the services of junior Linda Frohlich, the team's leading scorer each of the past two seasons. Frohlich will miss UNLV's first three games while she competes for the German National Team in the European Championships.
"Linda plays a key role for us ... but I'm not going to make excuses," Miller said. "We were not as sharp as we needed to be offensively tonight.
"I thought we did some good things in spurts, but we made too many mental mistakes tonight. We just have to get better, we have to improve in the game situations and execute better."
Petra Glaser, a 6-6 freshman center, led the Lady Rebels with 12 points and seven rebounds while Ingalls came off the bench and added 10 points.
Kate Fitzgerald and Jene Vanderbilt paced the Roadrunners with 12 points each.
UNLV resumes its homestand Friday night when it plays Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the opening round of the Cox Communications/Lady Rebel Shootout at 7:35 p.m.
