Editorial: Neighborhoods need better taxi service
Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000 | 9:45 a.m.
With all the taxicabs we see around town, one would think it would be no problem catching a ride from anywhere in the Las Vegas Valley. But unless you live near the Strip you could witness the next arrival of Haley's Comet before spotting another cab in your neighborhood.
To be blunt, residential taxi service is poor. As reported by the Sun's Richard N. Velotta, service is so poor the Taxicab Authority of Nevada has even discussed the possible use of Global Positioning System satellites to keep track of taxis.
We are not prepared to endorse the use of Big Brother techniques to monitor commerce. But we think Southern Nevada's 13 cab companies need to sit down soon and come up with a workable plan to improve residential service. They owe it to our elderly residents and to those who do not live near bus stops.
A deadline should be set to complete this plan. Otherwise, we believe the Taxicab Authority needs to force a solution.
