Reno man convicted in Lake Lahontan shootings

Monday, Nov. 20, 2000 | 4:34 a.m.

The Lyon District Court jury deliberated about three hours before convicting John Stinchfield Jr. on Thursday evening. He awaits a Jan. 8 sentencing date.

Stinchfield was found guilty of murdering George Robles, 58, and Phyllis McKellar, 69, during an alcohol-fueled argument over a fishing hole.

He also fired a shot at his father, John Stinchfield Sr., but missed over his head.

The younger Stinchfield had been fishing at the reservoir with his father and the two victims when the dispute erupted. He was accused of shooting the two with a .22-caliber rifle.

The younger Stinchfield was on parole for an earlier fraud conviction at the time.

The state Division of Parole and Probation later was criticized for failing to adequately supervise him.
