The former executive director of the Moapa Indian Housing Authority has been sentenced to five months in prison and five months on house arrest for embezzling money from the government agency.
Hazel Ann Mike, 51, of Moapa was indicted in January on 75 counts of theft and later pleaded guilty to two counts. Prosecutors alleged she took about $37,000 from the agency.
Assistant Federal Public Defender Rene Valladares said Friday his client, who has been diagnosed as a pathological gambler, committed the thefts to feed her habit.
Mike also must perform 200 hours of community service after her release.
