Boy Scouts collect 124 tons for needy

On Saturday night the Boy Scouts delivered 124 tons of food to the Salvation Army collected by more than 6,000 area scouts and their leaders through the Scouting for Food program.

The Salvation Army warehouse went from empty to full on Saturday, Boy Scout spokesman Mike Miller said.

Food collected by the scouts also went to Catholic Charities. Both organizations will distribute the food to needy families during the coming months.

Last year Boy Scouts collected 108 tons of food. The Scouting for Food program has been running since 1988. Over the past 12 years the scouts have collected more than 1,000 tons of food.

Seminars planned for senior citizens

Gov. Kenny Guinn announced today there would be seminars in Las Vegas, Carson City and Reno to help senior citizens with their applications to join the state's low-cost drug prescription program.

"We want to make sure that each senior citizen in Nevada currently struggling with the cost of prescription medicine has every opportunity to sign up for SenioRx before the deadline for open enrollment," Guinn said.

Signups for the program started Nov. 1 and will continue through Dec. 31.

The seminars will be Nov. 27 at the Las Vegas Senior Center, 451 E. Bonanza Road at 1 p.m and 6 p.m.; Nov. 28 at the Carson City Senior Citizen Center; and Nov. 28 at the Washoe County Senior Citizen Center in Reno.

The program provides eligible seniors a subsidy of up to $40 a month for an insurance policy that covers prescription drugs.

Car burglars strike in canyon

The Bureau of Land Management is warning visitors about a recent string of car break-ins at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

In each of the incidents, the burglars are believed to look in wallets or purses inside parked cars and take a single credit card, BLM spokesman Phil Guerrero said.

"Our customers may not realize they have been broken into until several days or potentially weeks later, when they receive their credit card statements with errant charges."
