Furniture recipients are sought

More than 20 needy Las Vegans will receive an early Christmas gift this year from Walker Furniture.
The store is accepting nominations for 22 families or individuals who need new furniture that will be provided by Walker's Home for the Holidays program.
Letters will be first read by a committee of social workers, who will select 44 families for an executive committee to review. The community and business leaders will pick the families that will receive the furniture.
"We supply an entire home's worth of furniture," Patti Gerace, Walker's marketing director, said.
All of the furniture is paid for by Walker's. Most furniture brands participate and give Walker's a price break, Gerace said.
In its seventh year, Home for the Holidays has helped dozens of families. In 1999 the company helped 20 families, up from the 12 it started with in 1994.
Recipients included a single mother and her four children who lived in their car for two months, fire victims who lost their homes and a family that provided foster care for children with AIDS.
The deadline for letters is Dec. 7. On Dec. 14 the recipients will be announced. Walker will deliver the furniture the week of Dec. 18.
"We hope to deliver the new furniture before the holidays," Gerace said.
Nominations can be sent to Walker Furniture, 301 Martin L. King Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89106.
