Condemnation OK’d for parcel slated for U.S. 95 interchange

Monday, Nov. 20, 2000 | 11:58 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- The state Tranportation Board today approved the start of condemnation of a small parcel needed for construction of the interchange at Durango Drive and U.S. 95 in Las Vegas.

The transportation department has offered $147,700 for the property that includes 17,201 square feet and a permanent easement of 56,406 square feet. Northwest 95 LLC, the owner of the property, is asking for $305,000.

The board held a special meeting so bidding could start on the project estimated to cost $17 million. Construction could start in April.

State Transportation Director Tom Stephens said negotiations would continue with the owner but this allows the department immediate entry into the property. Gov. Kenny Guinn, board chairman, asked how much a court suit might cost if the negotiations are unsuccessful.

Brian Hutchins, who heads the legal staff at the transportation department, said it probably would be $12,000 but it could run to $20,000 if the litigation is protracted.

The board is not scheduled to meet in regular session until January, and the department asked for the special meeting so this project could move forward.
